When you try to help people, you are helping God. This is one of the more difficult concepts to wrap your head around because it goes against everything we’ve been taught. We’re taught to “love our neighbor” and “do unto others as we would have them do unto us.” So, if I help someone in need, why wouldn’t I want them to help me in return? But what happens when they don’t? What happens when they turn their back on me and I lose my home because someone else helped me while I helped no one? To help people is to help God refers to the idea that when you act in accordance with the teachings of your religion, you are actually acting in accordance with God himself. This means that whenever you act selflessly, you are actually acting in accordance with the teachings of your religion (or for that matter, any religion).
For example, if you’re a Muslim and you see a starving man asking for food, then it is likely that Allah would prefer for you to give him food rather than refuse his request. Likewise, if a person tries to harm another person but is stopped by a bystander who cares about that person then it is likely that God would prefer for that bystander to intervene rather than ignore the harm being done.
